Applicants are encouraged to provide authentic responses that reflect specific experiences, challenges, or moments that have influenced their decision to pursue medicine.

The Dr. Wael Sakr Scholarship for Medical Students carries a one-time award of $1,000, providing financial assistance that can help a selected undergraduate student manage educational expenses while continuing toward a medical career. The winner is scheduled to be announced on May 15, 2027, with notification provided directly by email.

Dr. Wael Sakr brings substantial experience in medical education and research to the scholarship initiative. After completing his medical training at the University of Damascus in Syria, he pursues postgraduate education in the United States, including an Anatomic Pathology residency and a Surgical Pathology fellowship. He joins Wayne State University School of Medicine in 1990 and later serves as Chairman of its Department of Pathology from 2008 to 2022. In 2022, Dr. Wael Sakr becomes Dean of the Wayne State University School of Medicine.

His research career includes extensive work in prostate cancer, particularly the study of racial disparities affecting disease incidence, progression, and outcomes among African American men. Dr. Wael Sakr has contributed to more than 200 peer-reviewed publications and has supported advances in pathology, cancer research, and medical education through research, teaching, mentorship, and institutional leadership.
