Little Beakers Releases 8-Point Science Camp Checklist for Winter Break

Oct 30, 2026

With Thanksgiving and winter break camps approaching, Little Beakers has published an eight-point checklist that helps parents compare science camps on daily structure, staff screening, age grouping and how much hands-on work each child actually does.

-- Parents booking school-break programs for Thanksgiving and the winter holidays now have a new tool to compare their options. Little Beakers, a hands-on science lab for children with five locations in Texas and Utah, has published an eight-point checklist for choosing a science camp at https://littlebeakers.com/science-camp-checklist/.

Trevor Morgan, the company’s owner, wrote the guide. Little Beakers runs camps at all five of its labs, and the checklist addresses a problem Morgan sees across the industry: camp brochures tend to promise the same mix of fun, learning and STEM, which makes programs hard to tell apart.

“The difference between a great science camp and a glorified daycare is invisible in the brochure and obvious in about four questions,” Morgan writes.

What the checklist asks

The first question, according to the guide, is what children actually do each hour. Morgan recommends asking how many experiments run per day and how many each child does, rather than one per table. Parents should also ask what a specific weekday morning looks like. A camp that cannot answer in that much detail, he writes, has already given its answer.

Theme comes next. The guide advises choosing the week a child already talks about over the one that sounds most impressive. “Obsession is the best teacher,” Morgan writes.

The remaining points cover how a single theme is adapted across a wide age range and whether a half-day or full-day schedule fits a child’s stamina. They also cover how instructors are screened, who designed the curriculum and whether campers use real lab equipment. One point asks whether the camp runs during spring break and winter holidays as well as summer. The last suggests a low-cost trial before committing to a full week.

The guide also lists warning signs. These include vague daily schedules, programs built mostly around demonstrations, identical activities for 5-year-olds and 14-year-olds, and no written cancellation policy.

Why format matters

The checklist grounds its focus on hands-on work in education research. It cites a meta-analysis of 225 studies in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, which found that students taught by lecture were about 1.5 times more likely to fail than students who learned actively.

It also points to a large randomized study of school visits to a cultural institution, reported in Education Next. Students in that study showed stronger critical thinking and remembered specifics weeks later, and the largest gains went to students with the fewest other opportunities.

Camps at Little Beakers

Little Beakers runs summer, spring break and holiday camps across 19 themes for children ages 3 to 16 in Texas and 5 to 16 in Utah. Campers complete about seven activities and experiments per day, and every instructor is background-checked. The curriculum comes from founder Dr. Cinttya Morgan, a military and aerospace polymers chemist.

Texas morning sessions run 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and Utah mornings run from about 9 a.m. to noon. Themes and dates are listed at https://littlebeakers.com/science-camps/. For families unsure whether a child will enjoy a lab setting, the guide recommends a one-hour Open Lab visit before booking a camp week.
