-- Sofwave, a regenerative aesthetics company, has new clinical data behind one of its two core technologies, and the timing lines up with a question a lot of patients are already asking. What actually happens to the body after significant weight loss, and what can be done about it.
A blank-controlled randomized trial of Sofwave’s Pure Impact VIP platform, which delivers PlyoPulse electrical muscle stimulation technology, was conducted between July 2025 and January 2026 and published in the September 2026 issue of Aesthetic Surgery Journal. The study, led by Dr. Kiya Movassaghi of Oregon Health & Science University, enrolled 38 healthy adults split evenly between a treatment group and a control group. Participants received six weekly PlyoPulse sessions targeting the abdomen, quadriceps, hamstrings, and glutes, with function measured at baseline, week five, and week nine.
By week five, researchers recorded a 68 percent improvement in prone hip extension, a 42 percent improvement in paced curl-up performance, a 53 percent improvement in seated quadriceps extension, and a 73 percent improvement in side plank endurance. Three of those four gains were still statistically significant at week nine, four weeks after the last session. Sixty-eight percent of participants reported their muscles felt stronger and firmer, and subjects also reported improved satisfaction with their abdomen, buttocks, and inner thighs. Average discomfort scored 1.2 out of 10, with 82 percent of sessions rated as none to minimal, and no adverse events were reported.
“This publication adds an important layer of clinical evidence to our Pure Impact VIP platform by demonstrating that PlyoPulse’s synchronized, multi-muscle activation can produce measurable gains in objective functional performance, sustained through the four-week follow-up, not just aesthetic improvement,” said Louis Scafuri, CEO of Sofwave.
Muscle tone, though, is only part of what changes when someone loses a significant amount of weight. Skin often doesn’t shrink at the same pace as the rest of the body, and that’s a different problem than the one Pure Impact was built to solve. According to the company’s own patient resources on Loose Skin After Weight Loss, several factors determine whether skin bounces back afterward: age, how quickly the weight came off, whether someone has gone through repeated cycles of gaining and losing, and how much collagen and elastin the skin was producing before any of it started.
Sofwave’s other core platform, the ultrasound-based Sofwave device, targets that problem directly. It works on the mid-dermal layer, where the company says treatment remodels collagen fibers over time, and most patients see visible improvement after a single 45-minute session with minimal downtime.
Muscle tone and skin laxity aren’t the same issue, and the two technologies are built to address them separately. Pure Impact targets muscle. The Sofwave device targets skin. Weight loss, especially when it happens quickly or repeatedly, tends to affect both at once, which is why the company offers two distinct treatments rather than one fix for everything that changes.
